The short version

Aether New Tab stores all your data locally in your browser only. We collect nothing. We send nothing. No servers, no accounts, no tracking.

1. Information We Collect

Aether New Tab does not collect, transmit, or store any personal information on external servers. All data generated by your use of the extension is stored exclusively in your browser's local storage (localStorage).

The following data is stored locally on your device only:

  • Your name (if entered in Settings)
  • To-do list items
  • Notepad content
  • Custom shortcuts
  • Selected wallpaper and uploaded wallpaper images
  • Preferred language and clock settings
  • Selected search engine preference

2. Location Data

The extension requests your approximate geolocation solely to display local weather information. This location data is sent directly to Open-Meteo (a free, open-source weather API) and Nominatim (OpenStreetMap) for reverse geocoding. Neither service requires account registration or retains personally identifiable information.

We do not store, log, or transmit your location data ourselves.

3. Browser History

The extension accesses your browser history only to display it within the History panel inside the New Tab page. This data is read locally and never transmitted externally.

4. Third-Party Services

  • Open-Meteo (weather data)
  • Nominatim / OpenStreetMap (city name lookup)
  • Unsplash (default wallpaper images)
  • Google Fonts / db.onlinewebfonts.com (typography)

5. Permissions Justification

  • storage — Save your preferences, to-dos, notes, and shortcuts locally
  • history — Display your recent browsing history in the History panel
  • management — Reserved for future Extension Manager feature
  • geolocation — Display accurate local weather information

6. Data Retention & Deletion

All data is stored in your browser's localStorage. You can delete all extension data at any time by:

  • Clearing your browser's site data in Chrome settings
  • Uninstalling the extension (all data is removed automatically)

7. Children's Privacy

This extension does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. No personal data is collected by the extension itself.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy occasionally. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance.
